Making education fun!
Making Waves Speaker Series presentations occur every third Thursday of the month from 6 to 8 pm and explore varied topics such as sharks, turtle nesting, and other interesting facets of aquatic life.
March 20, 2014 - Dr. Daniel Huber, University of Tampa
Dr. Huber will provide an examination of nutritional physiology, aquarium design, and mechanical properties of the spine in the development of spinal deformities in captive Sand Tiger Sharks.
April 17, 2014 - Dr. Mya Breitbart, University of South Florida
Dr. Breitbart uses molecular techniques to examine the diversity and ecological roles of viruses and bacteria in a wide range of environments – including seawater, marine animals, coral reefs, and reclaimed water. Dr. Breitbart will discuss her discoveries concerning new viruses found in marine mammals.
May 15, 2014 - Rhonda Bailey, Biologist, Florida Wildlife Commission
Ms. Bailey will discuss her research concerning sea turtle strandings and migratory patterns. June 19, 2014 Gretchen Lovewell, Staff Scientist, Program Manager, Mote Marine Laboratory Ms. Lovewell will discuss managing the Stranding Investigations Program at Mote Marine Laboratory.
July 17, 2014 - Dr. Bob Bonde, Research Biologist, Sirenia Project/SE Ecological Science Center/ US Geological Survey
Dr. Bonde will discuss his experience as a research biologist for the Sirenia Project of the U.S. Geological Survey and the life history monitoring of the manatee population in Crystal River, Florida.
August 21, 2014 - Dr. Stan Kuczaj, Editor in Chief of Animal Behavior and Cognition
Dr. Kuczaj will discuss his research on the behavioral and cognitive abilities of marine mammals.
September 18, 2014 - Dr. Michael Middlebrooks, University of Tampa
Dr. Middlebrooks will discuss his research with photosynthetic sea slugs and how photosynthetic activity affects their behavior and ecological interactions.
October 16, 2014 - Dr. Heather Masonjones, University of Tampa
Dr. Masonjones will discuss her research concerning the behavioral ecology and reproductive physiology of sea horses and related fish.
November 20, 2014 - Dr. Michael Walsh, Clearwater Marine Aquarium Veterinarian
